By Whose Eyes do you Seek to be Beautiful?

1 Samuel 16:7: “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

So you have a girl who cries at her reflection wishing she looked like the models in the magazines, and a girl who loves her reflection because she can’t go two steps without a trail of men hawking her. What’s the difference between these two ladies?

In my opinion, there’s no difference at all.

Whether you are confident or suffer from low self-esteem, if you value or devalue yourself because of others, there’s a problem. God is calling for us to see ourselves the way He sees us, and reject the standards that satan has placed on this world.

Sure it’s easier said than done, in fact, it is an everyday process. We are bombarded with media that portray shallow impossible standards of beauty. Here’s a funny story: Model Cindy Crawford once said, “I wish I looked like Cindy Crawford.”
My point is it gets scary when we digest unrealistic standards and are unable to separate what is real from the fake.

Let me break it down a little further.

A Worldly Woman

No disrespect to these women, but let’s be real. These women are like a bouquet of flowers, and who doesn’t like flowers? Flowers are beautiful and colorful, and draw attention. There’s only one issue—flowers are purchased to be decorative beauties in your home, but not for long. Flowers begin to wither and their beauty is short-lived. Sure there are guys who know this and will still take one of these ladies in a heartbeat. But why strive for momentary beauty?

Proverbs 31:30: Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Don’t let these women fool you. As confident as they appear to be on camera, I guarantee you there lay a little girl inside of them who hate what she sees when she looks in the mirror. That little girl comes to surface every time the makeup comes off and the camera shuts off. Flowers may bring out those drapes in your living room but when it dies you are left with the same living room. Don’t live for a moment. Use every moment and live.

A Woman of God

A woman of God is like a green plant. Sure to some she may seem dull compared to the colorful bouquets of flowers, but unlike her counterpart she sustains. The shallow bouquets of flowers are just snippets of her, they are just freeze frames of her beautiful silhouettes. Buying a bouquet of flowers is the cheap way of getting what a plant can offer. Dealing with a worldly woman is an impatient way to get the sex and attractiveness that comes from a woman of God. But it doesn’t last long.

A woman of God is the real deal. But she can’t be treated any old way. She is precious to God and must not be mistreated. She can produce flowers just as beautiful, if not more beautiful, but she must be protected and constantly in God’s elements. Though her flowers may fade, her leaves and foundation still stands. She can produce flowers as long as she lives.

Proverbs 31:10-12: A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.

The lesson here is focus on feeding your spirit and not so much on the physical. Don’t get me wrong; it’s nothing like getting dolled up and embracing your beauty. It becomes a problem when you feel that’s all you are.

And if you don’t look like a model chick, guess what—most of us don’t. I certainly don’t and I’m proud of it. I’m a supermodel in the spirit and no matter how old I get that will never change. Good men are not looking for quick fixes; they are looking for a powerful woman of God to back them up. So next time you look in the mirror and wish you were a pound smaller, or next time you decide to wear that form-fitting dress only for Facebook likes, remember this: You are not just a flower. You are a beautiful flower producing plant. Embrace it.
